Alan Hughes – After trying bowls whilst in Spain. When I returned in March 2019, I approached Jarrow Bowls club who were very welcoming and let me play a few ends, I immediately joined the club and was soon playing in league games.
I was at the club every day practising and playing anybody who would have a game with me. I then played a few games for the vets and was playing as much as I could. This year I played as much as possible but due to covid it was very limited, but thanks to Mal we did enjoy local games and competitions.
With a bit of luck I managed to win the club championship, in only my second season, and I’m looking forward to next year when things will be back to normal.
I would like to thank all the members who made me feel welcome and look forward to playing and supporting the club in the future.
Val McGregor – I’ve been playing 3 years and was welcomed into the club as completely new to the game. I’ve had several players offering support to help improve my game.
I thought the game was easy and the players older, stuffy people I was very wrong on both assumptions. With a growing number of younger players their is a lot more diversity.
I’ve improved a lot this year having confidence to play my own game. I come for social engagement and enjoy the good hearted banter both between our club players and visitors.
Malcolm Johnston – I began playing bowls in 1988 and found it a great game for all abilities, it can be really social and friendly or highly competitive. In the first few years it was the friendly roll ups, jumbles and social side that was the most enjoyable.
